No Lowering isn't a slogan. It's a contract.

Standards is not a clothing company. The shirts and the hats are signals — what you wear when you've decided to live by something higher than average. This is the story behind them.

The Rise

I arrived at Michigan State in 1984 with one goal: to be the best offensive lineman who ever played. By 1989 I was the #2 overall pick in the NFL Draft, on the cover of Sports Illustrated — "The Incredible Bulk" — with the largest contract an offensive lineman had ever signed. I stood at the summit. And I had been drinking and using through most of the climb.

The Fall

Green Bay was a disaster. Steroids gave way to prescription painkillers and alcohol. Sports Illustrated came back with a second cover: "The Incredible Bust." My brother John died of cancer in 1993. I walked away from football the same year — 255 pounds, yellow skin, unemployable. I had lowered every standard I had, and I paid the full price.

The Bottom — March 23, 1995

I checked into Brighton Hospital in Michigan. Four days of severe withdrawal. Then the program. Then Step 3 — turning my will over to God. I left 17 days later with a standard I would not lower. I have not had a drink or a drug since.

"I still want the edge. Before sobriety, the edge was chemicals. Now, the edge is my spirit and my ability to love life and who I am."

The Comeback

Six months sober, I called my old agent and told him I wanted back in. The Indianapolis Colts gave me a chance. I made the roster, earned the starting right tackle job, blocked Reggie White in a win over the defending Super Bowl champions, and was named the Colts' Comeback Player of the Year. I retired in 1999 — on my own terms, honoring a promise I had made to God.

The Life

A marriage. A family. More than 100 talks in the rooms of AA. Sober every day since March 23, 1995 — not because I solved it once, but because I choose it every morning.

No Lowering is not a boast. It is hard-won knowledge — the decision I made that day, and have renewed every day since.

Standards exists for the people who've chosen to rebuild.
